How to design artwork for T-shirt printing

One of the biggest perks of being a graphic designer, in addition to working in an extremely lucrative field, is that you can express yourself through your creations. Before you start, follow these rules to make sure that the end result will look as good as possible.

Design artwork specifically for T-shirts

 

The fact that you already have a design that you like does not guarantee that it might look great on a T-shirt. A lot of images look amazing on a large computer screen, but do not translate well on fabric, either because the colours aren’t as vibrant or because the image doesn’t have the right size. For example, an image with a lot of details will never be as impactful on a T-shirt, because there simply isn’t enough room for everything. Similarly, if it is too small, no one will be able to see it. For the maximum effect, design the image specifically for T-shirts and think about proportions and ratio.

 

Choose your colours right

 

Getting designs to be true-to-colour on fabric can be quite challenging, even for professional screen printing companies. Sometimes, some colours appear to be one or two shades off, or there are problems in terms of brightness and contrast. To avoid this, you should limit yourself to using Pantone colours. This way, the printing company will understand exactly what you want to get and avoid the situations where a design has one colour on screen and another on fabric. Don’t forget to ask the printing company for some samples of T-shirts they have printed.

 

Always use vector format

 

When you work on a design for a T-shirt, make sure you save everything you do as a vector, not in .jpg, .png or other formats. Vectors exist in a mathematical space and have nothing to do with image resolution. They allow you to create much cleaner lines and, before printing, you can reduce or enlarge your image without it losing its quality. Normally, when you try to stretch a jpeg or png, it becomes pixelated, but this issue does not occur when working with vectors. There are many programs you could use for this, but Adobe Illustrator is considered to be the best.
